Case Study- Custom Modular Lifting Beam Assembly to Lift 47 Different Product Configurations

The Challenge

Our customer came to us with a challenge. They were in the midst of assembling modular building units in their facility for a generating station project. Once the units were to be assembled they would need to be lifted up onto a flatbed truck to be transported to site. They had three overhead cranes in each bay (25 tonne capacity ea.) that could be used to perform the lift but no way of connecting to and supporting the units.

The kicker....There were 47 different units to be lifted ranging from 12' - 60' in length, 9' - 16' in width, 13.75' overall height, and 9000 lbs - 135000 lbs in weight. There were 4 - 16 lifting lugs per unit that the complete unit load would need to be distibuted over to not cause damage. On top of that there was limited headroom with the distance from the crane to the top side of the units being only 10'. And....the first lift would need to be performed in only 6 weeks!

The Solution

Motivation Industrial Equipment designed and manufactured a fully adjustable, modular lifting beam assembly that was adjustable to account for the various widths, modules could be added and subtracted to account for the various lengths, and a custom program was created to determine the optimal crane attachment location to 1. Not overload the cranes. 2. Not overload the lifting beam assemblies, and 3. Keep the units balanced during the lift.

The Result

The safe and efficient loading of 47 different building units using only four adjustable lifting beam modules, and... another happy customer!
